I aim to enjoy quality time outside of office hours by minimising work distractions and avoiding disturbances from colleagues on WhatsApp after work.
Jimi needs to separate work-related messages from his personal ones to maintain a healthy work-life balance. He struggles to disconnect from work because he gets work-related messages and notifications on his personal phone. Consequently, he often feels compelled to reply to work messages during his personal time, disrupting moments with his family and causing stress and burnout.
• Separation of work and personal chat
• Uninterrupted personal time after working hours
Outside of working hours, Jimi continues to receive work-related notifications, making it challenging for him to disconnect from work and fully engage with his family. He struggles to enjoy his personal time due to the constant worry of missing important work messages.
Heading back home after a hectic work day. —Can’t wait to watch Toy Story 4 with my family.
Dinner Time. Received work-related messages from colleague, Dave. —Why are you still messaging me about work at this hour?
While chatting with friends on WhatsApp. —Should I reply Dave? Maybe I should work on it now.
Watching Toy Story 4 with family. —Do I have the time to complete the work by tomorrow? Maybe I should quit this job.
The issue with the existing user flow lies in its failure to distinguish between group chats and personal chats. This poses a problem as users face difficulty in swiftly locating specific conversations. Furthermore, the absence of segmentation within group chats—differentiating personal groups from work-related groups—further exacerbates the issue.
Our proposed enhanced user flow introduces Spaces as a means to categorise both group chats and personal chats. One notable advantage of Spaces is enabling users to incorporate both groups and private chats within a designated Space. Presently, the existing flow does not allow users to include a group within another group.
Create Spaces to streamline and organise your chats effortlessly. These customisable Spaces allow for easy prioritisation and categorisation of your conversations based on your preferences.
We include a filter chips that is easily accessible. Each chat row have a coloured bar at the left side to signify the space where it belong. The avatar icon shapes were differentiated - circle for private chats, rounded square for group chats.
We've integrated mute scheduling as a supplementary feature alongside manual muting. Muted spaces will be visually marked by a greyed-out appearance, accompanied by a notification bar.
Users can establish their custom mute schedule. For instance, if you prefer to mute your work group from 6 pm to 8 am after office hours, the work group will resume receiving notifications the following day at 8 am.
By utilising Spaces, users can effectively minimise work-related interruptions after office hours, allowing them to fully enjoy their personal leisure time.
The project has successfully met its objective by identifying and integrating user needs, as evidenced through the articulated user stories. Through the introduction of innovative features such as Spaces, the project aims to offer a comprehensive solution, empowering users to manage their digital interactions and achieve a balanced integration of work commitments and personal life.
In conclusion, the WhatsApp project has delivered a product solution that directly addresses users' concerns regarding work-life balance and interruptions beyond office hours. By harnessing the capabilities of Spaces, this initiative holds the promise of significantly improving users' lives, allowing them to maximise personal time and enhance their overall well-being.
